My interest in plants, parks, and open spaces goes back a long way. As a 13 year-old, I knew I wanted to work in amenity horticulture, and help to look after New Zealand’s wealth of public parks and gardens. Out of seven children in my family, I was the one who took responsibility for maintaining our section at home – mowing the lawn, growing veges, and doing landscaping. I was passionate about my subject, and took horticulture in my final years at college. This was perhaps not seen as the right thing to do at my school at the time – horticulture had a reputation as an easy option.

I had set my course, and took up an apprenticeship with the parks department at a local council. That’s me in the photo , on the job in Percy Reserve, Lower Hutt in 1985, learning the business literally from the ground up.

I’m an industry professional with 30 years’ experience under my belt, acquired both as an independent consultant, and from management, planning, and operational roles with local authorities and infrastructure maintenance companies. I have also worked as a horticultural lecturer and parks industry trainer.

The point of difference I can bring to your organisation lies in the extent of my practical expertise and depth of knowledge across the public and private sectors. As well as my parks experience, I’ve managed community facilities such as swimming pools, halls, and stadiums. I also possess the skills to explore the human side of your business. In this area, I have advanced training in health and safety and I am a ICAM trained incident investigator; I’m an experienced educator, trainer, group facilitator and trained counsellor.

Formal qualifications

  • Bachelor of Parks and Recreation Management

  • Diploma in Business

  • Trade Certificate in Horticulture and Gardening

  • Certificate in Adult Teaching

  • Advanced HSR health and safety unit standards

On a personal level I like to spend my spare time with my family, mountain biking and walking in the beautiful hills of Central Otago.

As a consultant I have worked with a range of clients – local authorities, schools, facility trusts and infrastructure maintenance companies. I have completed a variety of projects, such as park operation reviews, fees reviews, needs assessments, park audits, and asset condition assessments. I’ve written park policies and reserve and asset management plans, including consulting with recreation user groups. I’ve also assisted with tendering, and have coached and mentored staff.

“The Playground Assessment Reports prepared for Council tick all the boxes and provide an excellent basis for input to the Community Facilities Activity Management Plan. I would also like to commend Jonathan on the timely and efficient manner in which Reserve Management Planning work has been undertaken for Council. The high quality of documents delivered, is credited to Jonathan's good understanding of Local Government processes, the level of engagement that he has undertaken with community groups and his ability to facilitate group discussions well.”

Mark Rykers, Manager Open Space and Property, Selwyn District Council

“Jonathan assisted us with a project focused on improving staff engagement and the role of the Supervisor and First Line Manager. I found Jonathan’s unique combination of industry knowledge and behavioural insight to be right on the mark for this project. Jonathan was able to very quickly identify the areas where improvement could and would be achieved. Jonathan provided succinct and timely feedback and went the extra mile in getting to the crux of the matter as well as providing the more strategic view often missed when undertaking operationally focused reviews. I have no hesitation in recommending Greenspace Solutions [now Parkscape] to any potential employer and will certainly consider them for future projects.”

Craig Taylor, General Manager Christchurch Maintenance, CityCare Ltd

“Greenspace Solutions [Jonathan] did not just assist us with the development of our first Aquatic Centres Management Plan, Greenspace Solutions [now Parkscape] partnered with Council and helped drive an improvement program that has seen the development of robust asset management practices for the aquatic facilities. We are extremely pleased with the process followed and outcomes achieved.”

“Again, excellent report and happy to provide any verbal reference to your potential clients in the future if that were helpful to you. Just as an aside would you consider a similar consulting project(s)?" (Parks operations business review)
